the hub halifax

The Hub Halifax is an open place. It is a place for software developers, environmental and social activists, artists, engineers and everyone else (including lawyers) who wish to leave their home office, meetings at coffee-shops or structured office environment for an open-floor concept (with private conference rooms in the back). It is a place of few right angles but many colours. It is a place for sharing ideas, knowledge and inspiration.

openhub-jan171The nest was laid by four dear friends: Joanne Macrae, Tracy Boyer Morris, Rob MacArthur and Sera Thompson. With their warmth, openness and action, I can’t think of better people to connect spokes in the Halifax wheel.

I attended an international meeting in Madrid on their behalf in April 2008 and had the pleasure of meeting, and learning much from, others forming Hubs all over the world. An example of such learning:

where I would have suggested that the group vote in a hands-up/hands-down fashion (i.e. yes or no), the suggestion of the group was different. Instead, one of the walls in the room was labeled as the ‘yes’ wall and the opposite wall was labeled as the ‘no’ wall. Individuals were asked to physically stand between the walls in the spot that best represented how strongly they leaned to a particular wall. Decisions are seldom black and white. It was incredible to physically see how close everyone was (i.e. in the center of the room), despite the fact that some leaned to one wall and others to the other. I expect that my yes/no vote would have focused on the differences, not the similarities.

Halifax is full of doers. I expect many big things to come out of Halifax in the next 5-10 years and that many of such things will come out of the Hub.
